Retail Executive Master Plan - Background

Background

History

The ‘Retail Executive Master Plan' has been developed by Service Skills SA in response to industry concerns over the shortage of well trained retail executives and the difficulty in attracting & retaining  talented people in the largest employment industry in SA.

The RXMP aims to address the following industry concerns:

  • There is nothing employers can do to protect the current labour ‘pool' - how can they compete with current economy/market demands
  • Retail careers are not seen as a profession
  • A lack of highly skilled managers
  • Low retention rates of people within the industry
  • Constant ‘migration' of good staff
  • Retail is seen as a ‘Low priority' career option
  • There is a stigma of retail being a ‘stepping stone' industry
  • Career pathways, job roles & expectations are not clear within the industry

Funding

Two types of funding & industry support have been made available for the project. The Plan has come into fruition due to enormous industry support and major funding from Federal & State governments respectively through the Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and the Department of Further Education, Employment, Science & Technology (DFEEST).

The success of the first round of RXP helped in securing further funding, which now totals over $7million for all three rounds of the RXP Industry Partnership Program and Productivity Places Program for Existing Workers.
