Hair and Beauty SA (HBSA) have announced that the new Trade apprenticeship of Barbering will be available in South Australia in 2017 through participating Apprenticeship Centres and Registered Training Organisations.
It is a very rare event that a new Trade is declared and HBSA has worked hard with the SA Government Department of State Development, Consumer and Business Services and Service Skills SA (SSSA) to fulfil the regulatory obligations of creating this opportunity for our industry and young people in SA. The new Certificate III in Barbering will be available across Australia allowing for a national industry standard for qualified barbers to be created. (Refer to Skills IQ website here).
The Board of HBSA with the support of SSSA has been determined that both the Hairdressing and Barbering Apprenticeships should be serious and high quality accreditations and has worked with the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees' Association (SDA) to keep the nominal duration of both apprenticeships at 3 ½ years.
HBSA and SSSA will be keeping you updated as these exceptional events unfold. This will include:-
• An exciting formal launch with media and high level dignitaries in March or April of 2017 supported by our strategic partners.
• An application for a dual qualification over 4 years where apprentices will be able to complete both hairdressing and barbering qualifications. This will be the first of its type in Australia and will give young people three apprenticeship pathways in our industry.
• Reviewing the Overseas Hairdressing Recognition Panel to include Barbering. It is crucially important existing skilled and experienced barbers can be recognised through a regulated process.
• Work with Consumer and Business Services to promote quality hairdressing and barbering to ensure the South Australian public understands it should expect good service from qualified practitioners.
